Versatile counter-high refrigerator

The refrigerator is great--well designed to hold a great deal of food in a small space. The beverage can rack in the door is ideal, as it is easy to access. I purchased it to place in a "master suite" in use by my elderly grandfather, and the door is lightweight enough for him to easily open it with restricted hand movement. My only disappointement was that it arrived with a broken "foot." When I called the 800-number for a replacement part, I was redirected to a contracted parts warehouse. I had to pay $12.50 for a replacment part.

I bought this locally from Howards Electronics. I scored a floor model for $150. It had a little ding in the door, but I don't mind as its for my workshop anyway.

This is far bigger than most mini fridges. You could survive out of this if you were a bachelor or something.

I raised it up on an old end table that supports the weight well. I didn't need it on the floor, and bending over gets tiresome. Now its at the level of a real fridge but doesn't take up all that space and use that much power.

I have it loaded with a case of water and a couple 12 packs of soda at any given time. It keeps everything nicely chilled on a very low setting.

The freezer area is small, but could fit some frozen burritos and stuff. It's about the same size as a typical mini fridge freezer. You're not fitting a pizza in there unless its a tiny one.

Only complaint I have is the door doesn't stop from swinging all the way around. On other refrigerators, there's something built into the hinge mechanism that makes them swing out and stop. This one just keeps going all the way around. Not a really big deal, but you gotta be careful not to smack it into something next to it and dent the pretty stainless steel.

The front is actually steel, whereas some say they are and then you can't stick a magnet to the front of the door. (isn't steel ferrous?) This one holds a magnet just fine. I know we all like to hang crap on the fridge.. so go for it.

I got this when Amazon was blowing them out for a hugely discounted price. I read the reviews and was expecting this to arrive in pieces but was pleasantly surprised to find it arrived in good shape. Had a couple small dings in the back, but that is par for anything of size that isn't packaged for shipping.

If you are a Prime customer I'd advise springing for overnight shipping. Less moving around by the carrier.

This frig is great looking. Front is gorgeous and inside was perfect. Gets very cold, even on low setting.

Everyone who has seen it wanted to know why I didn't order more for them.

Heck with them. I should have ordered a couple more for myself!

I purchased this in June 2007 for my office. I wanted to cut down on feeding one-dollar bills into the vending machines in the office break room and bring my own lunch and snacks to work.

This refrigerator is great! It runs quietly (right behind my desk!). I've defrosted it once and wiped it clean twice (I ran the cold setting too high and split open a can).

I ran into the same problems other customers mention about the shipping. My refrigerator arrived with a crease in the lower right-hand corner. I called Amazon and they deducted a portion of my costs (I was given the option of sending it back, but the dent didn't affect the operation).

Anyway, one year later, I'm thrilled with my purchase. Amazon's customer service was fantastic, too. That's why, even with the dent, I'm giving this product 5 STARS.

Purchased for my college son........he loves it, it works great, spacious....however I am not happy that it arrived damaged, should be packaged MUCH better to prevent the good sized crease in the door it arrived with. He refused to let me return it and request one not damaged....next time I receive something so damaged from lack of proper packing I will cease ordering from amazon.

Beautiful looking quiet and efficient small Refrigerator. Black spillproof top and black interior is a nice touch. Good storage setup too. Froze all my beverages at the 3/4 of max setting,so I dialed it down to 1/4 setting. I believe this unit could sub as a small freezer the compressor/evaporator is so good.
Refrigerator arrived dented. Sent for a replacement and it was dented worse. Packing material was totally inadequate for this product. I kept the least dented one and shipped th other back. Nothing from Amazon to compensate for the damage. Help other cu

Ordered Monday night, FedEx got it here (Manhattan, NY) on Friday. It was shipped from Kentucky.

Sanyo makes a great fridge that's a good price per cubic foot. The packaging lacked a lot of styrofoam protection and the box was a bit tattered from the shipping, but overall it's a good deal, because of the free shipping for this 50lb. plus item. My refrigerator did not arrive with any obvious damage or dents. And the stainless steel is sweet.

There is an acrylic coating on the stainless steel door, and it comes wrapped in plastic from the factory, like every stainless steel appliance. The reviewer below just removed the protective plastic wrapping.

I bought this Sanyo compact refrigerator from Amazon back in 2005, and it is working just as well as day #1. It is installed in my bedroom, originally to store breastmilk for my new born child. It is very quiet and not very audible when it is cylced on (which might happen once every 1-2 hours). My shipping experience is similar to many reviewers here. There was a noticeable/permanent dent on the stainless stain door when it arrived, nothing else was damaged. However as always, Amazon came through with a very reasonable credit for the "damage", other than the dent, this refrigerator has been operating flawlessly for over 4 straight years. The only complaint I have with this refrigerator is the hassle of removing all contents to perform manual defrost, but even then I only had to perform this once a year. I would highly recommended this for anybody who is looking for a stylish, yet reliable refrigerator.

I carefully read every customer review of this product before placing my order and was therefore prepared for it to arrive in less than pristine condition. When I got the email from Amazon stating they had shipped utilizing DHL, I groaned inwardly as I have rarely had good experience with them. However, as a frequent Amazon customer, I knew they would equitably resolve any problems that might arise.
Well, it arrived today, brought to my front door in the arms of a rather small woman and placed gently inside my front door. There were no gouges, cuts, mangled portions or areas dented in on the box. When I opened it, I quickly discovered what everyone meant about the lack of adequate protective packaging. However the fridge was in pristine condition, absolutely perfect. It is whisper quiet and I feel certain I will have no problem sleeping with it in my room even though I am an incredibly light sleeper who is easily awakened with even the lightest sound. It is very roomy and the crisper is especially great since I like to keep fresh fruit on hand and truly enjoy it most when it is very cold. As soon as I plugged the unit up, it began freezing water in the ice tray.
I have no negative comments to make whatsoever and will gladly recommend this refrigerator to anyone and everyone who is in the market for a compact or mini fridge.

We purchased this item for an office. It looks good and is quiet. Unlike the other reviewers, we had no problems with the condition in which it arrived. Overall, a great little fridge. The freezer space is quite small, so if you are using this as your only unit in a dorm or apartment, it may not work well for that purpose.

Two Years of Fantastic Service!

I've owned this fridge for almost two years now, and it works as well as it did the day I received it. It arrived in perfect condition...undented and with all four feet intact!

The freezer is spacious enough to fit about four average size ice trays. And though your not supposed to, I've found that it's possible to keep a couple of small frozen items in it(a frozen dinner, ice cream sandwich, etc.) without ruining them.

The soda can holder in the door is very handy...though I often store other things in it, like lemons or condiments, since I don't drink much soda.

On its coldest settings, your drinks will be superbly chilled, and your fruits/veggies will last well in the crisper. My only gripe is that I'm limited in what I can put on the top shelf. If the fridge is too cold, anything on it will freeze. Many containers of yogurt have been ruined because of this!

Putting the fridge on a lower setting should prevent top-shelf freezing. This will also make it easier to maintain, because you'll have to defrost less. Don't wait until your freezer is fit to burst! It will be a sloppy, wet mess if you do, as the water tray will often remain snagged on chunks of ice while the tray is overflowing with melted water.

This refrigerator does its job well, is attractive & efficient, and will last a long time without much maintenance. Highly recommended!

When I saw the great pricing deal with 25 dollars off and free super saver shipping I purchased without reading the reviews... then I did and all I could think of is this cute little fridge is going to be smashed to kingdom come. To my surprise it was perfect. Packing could be improved, but if it does not have too far to ship (I live in Calif)and it should make it there intact. Runs quiet so far, frozen vegetables are frozen, lunch meats on the second shelf are not, crisper is a nice touch. bottom portion of door will hold a half gallon of milk, a two liter soft drink and still have a little room left. I think it's great. Help other customer

i got my frige today and like others, there were a few dents on one side; nothing major enough to return it. this is still a great value though, combined with the $25 dollars off, and free super saver shipping. the free shipping was overnight by the way, so dont pay extra to have it done. i assume amazon acknowledges the problem. i'm yet to see how great it works but im slightly dissapointed that there is no light.

Sanyo makes a good fridge no doubt it works great in my room, the only thing I'm dissapointed about is that Amazon didn't ship my product properly when the fridge arrived it had dents on the bottom and on the door as well, Amazon could of protect my product from being damaged while in transit, if you order this item request protection otherwise the shipping companies don't care about it... otherwise this item works great no problems I definately recommend Sanyo.

I have had this mini-fridge for 3 years now, and its great! I have no problems with the door staying shut or anything like that. Its quiet too, its always been in my bedroom and its not a problem. However, I guess I am a heavy sleeper and I find the occasional quiet hum soothing. Be careful with the temperature settings as this can easily be made into a freezer alone. Other than that, extremely stylish, and shows very little wear and tear. I have no dents or major scratches on it anywhere . . and I'm in college!

Why only 4 stars:

- the freezer section is ridiculously small, honestly what are you going to need to freeze that is that small?
- you've got to defrost the freezer section about every 3 months or it gets quite frosty and shrinks in size
- this last one is personal, the can holder that goes all the way down the side of the fridge, who needs that much room for soda?

If you have the Amazon Prime trial or have paid for it, pay $3.95 for overnight shipping. This way your fridge will arrive in flawless condition. I found this fridge to be very good. I set it to the coldest temperature when I got it and it actually exploded some soda cans and ice grew so fast the door popped open. I won't be doing that again. After one week, the fridge started making popping noises when the compressor turned on. I had to move it away from my bed because it would wake me up. Other than that, it has been reliable so far.

EDIT: I have had this fridge for over 12 months now, and the noise when the compressor turns on is still there, but it has been working very reliably. I am very happy with the purchase. It looks and works great.

Really Nice, But One Issue Regarding Reliability

I purchased this fridge about 10 months ago. It works quite well, keeps everything nice and cold. However, there's one issue that leads me to question long term reliability.
When the compressor turns off, it's accompanied by an annoying loud, metallic "click". When I first got the fridge, the sound was a fairly quiet, muffled "thump", but it grew louder over the next 10 months. In my experience, refrigerators develop a loud click on compressor turn-off only after quite a few years of use; then, it's just a matter of time before a part failure occurs.
I had chosen "Super Saver" delivery, but since the stated delivery time , after I placed my order, increased from a few days to over a month, I emailed Amazon about this and they then amended my order to have the fridge sent via overnight delivery, at no extra charge to me. I received the fridge soon thereafter, and without any of the dents or damage that others have mentioned. I've found Amazon's customer service to be, in most cases, excellent.

UPDATE : September 10, 2006
Well, the metallic click on compressor turn-off stopped several months ago and the fridge has been working pretty well since then, staying pretty quiet. True, there's some slight icing in some food stored on the top shelf, but it's not bad enough to cause me any aggravation.
The tiny freezer compartment doesn't keep ice cream firm, it stays somewhat soupy. (Yes, the freezer will fit pints sized containers of ice cream). But it does keep my bottles of aquavit and gin nearly icy cold, and ice cubes frozen.
Everything in the fridge still stays well chilled, nothing to worry about, there.
So overall, I'd say that this fridge does a more than adequate job. I've no regrets about purchasing it.

Received my package with a little damage to the box. Thought I was in trouble, but the fridge was pristine. Let it sit for a day before plugging it in - and it has worked like a dream ever since! It will fit 2 liter bottles, milk jugs.. cans and bottles fit on the door. Turned cooler dial just shy of 3/4 and the freezer works pretty good (Haven't tried ice cream). Comes with an ice cube tray that you can actually get the cubes out of.

I was leery of buying an item this big and relatively fragile on-line, but after having it delivered directly to work, not having to deal with the hassle of loading it up and hauling it myself, I am truly sold!!

Bottom line - I would highly recommend this refrigerator to anyone looking for a work or study model!

Little beauty sits over in the corner, quietly keeping everyday things cool. It's just used to keep drinks and snack items easily available. The kinds of things that you keep opening the regular refrigerator for all day long. My regular refrigerator seems to run a lot less and keeps items colder now that it's not opened countless times.

I do recommend that you use the sanyo as a shelf for storage, first the empty space is there and who can allow it. Also the unit needs to held down, its not well balanced. If you lean on the door as you bend down it has a tendency to tip forward. And that is the only really bad thing I can say about it.

I bought this mini fridge for my office because it was affordable and had the functionality I was looking for. Many of the reviews describe it as "quiet" and produces only a "light hum" that can barely be heard.

In my opinion it is really loud. The first problem is that the motor starts to run every 7 minutes or so for a duration of 3 minutes. This is assuming that you don't open the door at all. The hum is a distraction to me while I am at my desk and I share an office with another employee and he has already complained about the noise also.

I would not recommend this for office use. The actual temperature is fine and it keeps drinks and food cool enough. It is just too loud.

Nice fridge, but inspect before plugging in

Fridge arrived with no damage to the box or outside of the unit. The only problem was that the compressor either was not bolted properly at the factory or it worked loose during shipping. I had to remount it and tighten everything up before plugging it in.

It runs quite and gets quite cold. I recommend it overall but make sure you inspect it right away when you get it.

Nice Fridge but Door Design needs work

This was purchased for the office and the door of the refrigerator has a very weak wire bar that goes across the bottom shelf. If you have tall bottles of water or soda, they will fall over every time you open the door. This is the only place you can store tall items in a vertical position, so now we have to lay them down on the bottom of the refrigerator. The freezer works well, and the refrigerator keeps things cold. We are just not satisfied with the bottom shelf on the door.

nice fridge - quiet & cold!

It is very quiet, just a faint humming noise that you have to get right up close and bend over it to hear. I have it in the pantry, but could easily put it in my office.

It certainly gets cold enough. I like my beer cold, and, I have the unit set around 2/3 and it is nice and chilly, with plenty of control left to go colder. Items in the bottom shelf and door are cold too.

(I don't know what problem the other reviewer was having with items in the door not being cold enough. I do keep the fridge pretty full, so maybe that helps stabilize the temps, or, my unit is just not having that problem. So far, I haven't tried the freezer, e.g. for ice or ice-cream, so I can't comment on that).

Also, as far as I could tell, instructions didn't say anything about leaving it stand for 24 hours before running the first time (or after moving it and especially tilting), but I've seen that on other fridges, and I thought it was a good practise to follow, so I did.

I took the advice of other reviewers and ordered it with 1-day shipping, which seemed to have the desired effect as it came with no damage. $3 for 1 day shipping of a fridge is quite a deal - you have to love Amazon Prime!

I thought the packaging was basically sufficient as long as treated ok by the shipper, though it doesn't safeguard much against rough handling such as poking something into a side panel.

My wife said she could detect a faint smell at first, since it is in a small walk-in pantry where we usually keep the door closed, but I think that's all gone now.

I bought this one because of the energy rating (low enough), the size (big enough), and, the door wasn't dedicated to 12-oz cans like many of the others.

I'd buy this again!

Great For A Wet Bar

This is a great small refrigerator. The platinum and black finish add a touch of class. I am currently using this refrigerator as an accessory to a wet bar that I just installed. It fits perfect and keeps the beverages and other items very cold. It is also very quiet which is a plus. The only downfall is the spacing of the racks. It was very difficult to stack anything vertically. However, the door rack and can rack made up for it. For the price, this is a great, classy, little refrigerator.

looks nice makes a high pitch noise
The reviews are exactly as it is. If you are noise sensitive there are models that are better out there. This has a nice look but makes a high pitch noise. Other small fridges have a lower noise level. Beware if noise is a concern. Its not so loud as it is a high pitch.

Nice Fridge, Poorly Boxed by Sanyo
I've used this fridge for nearly a month and it works great. Beverages are ice cold and there's no frost; exactly what I wanted. I have to give Sanyo a "ding" for the poor packaging - they placed styrofoam only on the four corners (top and bottom) rather than all the way down the length of all edges, and nothing on the flat sides. Result? Right out of the box the coil on the back had been knocked off it's bracket during shipping and there were dents all the way up and down all four sides on the edges. I remounted the coil, fixed the bracket and tested it. It worked fine so I decided I could live with the dents rather than deal with the hassle because I needed a fridge "now" and it went under a desk rather than in the open anyway.

Perfect for my small office.
I have a small 'executive suite' style office. The office is used to meet with clients (all real work is done at home). It's always nice to offer the client a cold bottled water or coke. This refrigerator fills the bill perfectly. It fits under my desk and is there when I need it. Keeping it stocked with stuff is my biggest chore!

nice fridge - quiet & cold!
I'm very happy with this fridge.

It is very quiet, just a faint humming noise that you have to get right up close and bend over it to hear. I have it in the pantry, but could easily put it in my office.

It certainly gets cold enough. I like my beer cold, and, I have the unit set around 2/3 and it is nice and chilly, with plenty of control left to go colder. Items in the bottom shelf and door are cold too.

(I don't know what problem the other reviewer was having with items in the door not being cold enough. I do keep the fridge pretty full, so maybe that helps stabilize the temps, or, my unit is just not having that problem. So far, I haven't tried the freezer, e.g. for ice or ice-cream, so I can't comment on that).

Also, as far as I could tell, instructions didn't say anything about leaving it stand for 24 hours before running the first time (or after moving it and especially tilting), but I've seen that on other fridges, and I thought it was a good practise to follow, so I did.

I took the advice of other reviewers and ordered it with 1-day shipping, which seemed to have the desired effect as it came with no damage. $3 for 1 day shipping of a fridge is quite a deal - you have to love Amazon Prime!

I thought the packaging was basically sufficient as long as treated ok by the shipper, though it doesn't safeguard much against rough handling such as poking something into a side panel.

My wife said she could detect a faint smell at first, since it is in a small walk-in pantry where we usually keep the door closed, but I think that's all gone now.

I bought this one because of the energy rating (low enough), the size (big enough), and, the door wasn't dedicated to 12-oz cans like many of the others.

I'd buy this again!

Will almost certainly arrive damaged with ground shipping...
... foregoing the two reviews about shipping damage, I thought I'd try ordering this product for several reasons:

1) The hi-res dealer images of it from Sanyo.com made it look like one sexy fridge
2) The energy rating was good
3) I knew if the product did arrive damaged, Amazon would replace it, or refund my money anyway
4) I have Amazon Prime, so I figured paying $3.99 for overnight shipping would also make the delivery people think this was a special product, since it was going overnight, and not being sent across the country via Ground shipping, and abused in the process.

Well, the product arrived today, and initially, I thought, "This can't be good."

The box was extremely tattered... and the top was ripped open. I also heard rattling as the FedEx man helped me carry it up the stairs. Then he left, without even getting a signature. Oh, and at my front door the FedEx man just dropped the box on the ground in front of me.

I opened the box upstairs, and saw horrible, horrible packaging, as others have mentioned. The box was all beat up, and several of the inch or less thick padding was cracked and damaged.

Luckily, the fridge seemed to make it through intact... no dents, and it worked. The rattling as I carried it was the compressor... I still don't know if this is normal though.

These fridges are indeed shipped on a pallet, you can see that from the shipping sticker from Sanyo to Amazon's Nevada warehouse. Three fridges per pallet. All Amazon does is stick a FedEx/UPS sticker on these boxes, and ship them off. If I didn't get this sent overnight, I can almost guarantee the fridge would've beat beat to hell going ground from Nevada to New York.

As for this part of the item description,
"To keep the refrigerator looking brand new, its stainless-steel door has a clear acrylic coating that eliminates fingerprints and is easy to keep clean."

Well, it won't be happening for me, as the clear acrylic coating came ripped halfway down the upper right corner of the fridge, so I really had no choice but to rip all the rest of it off.

The fridge works, and it DOES look amazingly sexy, but unless you have Prime, or want to pay for expedited shipping, this will almost certainly come damaged until Amazon decides to start packaging these adequately. And really, I don't see why they don't, because it's just a hassle for the end customer, and an expensive dime on their end to pay for return shipping, and then shipping again for a replacement.

Poorly packaged and arrived damaged
Just like the previous reviewer, the refrigerator was inadequately packed and arrived very damaged. The front stainless steel was dented, the bottom was bent, and the whole front corner was bent in. These corresponded to damage and rips in the cardboard box. The problem seems to be that they were originally crated by Sanyo for individual sale at Costco (special order production just for them) and probably shipped to them on a pallet. They were obviously never meant to be shipped individually as there is essentially no padding inside the flimsy box (a few slivers of styrofoam top and bottom). Amazon does not repack or strengthen the packaging, so damage is inevitable. STEER CLEAR. Also, the actual dimensions of the unit are not what are listed and claimed by Sanyo. It is slightly taller than stated, which might make it unacceptable for tight applications with no room to spare. The rear of the unit does not have any protective "feet" at all: it is bare metal which can scratch your floor.

Prepared for the worst, received the best!
I carefully read every customer review of this product before placing my order and was therefore prepared for it to arrive in less than pristine condition. When I got the email from Amazon stating they had shipped utilizing DHL, I groaned inwardly as I have rarely had good experience with them. However, as a frequent Amazon customer, I knew they would equitably resolve any problems that might arise.
Well, it arrived today, brought to my front door in the arms of a rather small woman and placed gently inside my front door. There were no gouges, cuts, mangled portions or areas dented in on the box. When I opened it, I quickly discovered what everyone meant about the lack of adequate protective packaging. However the fridge was in pristine condition, absolutely perfect. It is whisper quiet and I feel certain I will have no problem sleeping with it in my room even though I am an incredibly light sleeper who is easily awakened with even the lightest sound. It is very roomy and the crisper is especially great since I like to keep fresh fruit on hand and truly enjoy it most when it is very cold. As soon as I plugged the unit up, it began freezing water in the ice tray.
I have no negative comments to make whatsoever and will gladly recommend this refrigerator to anyone and everyone who is in the market for a compact or mini fridge.
